Attending external childcare is a common experience for many children in Western countries. Although much research has examined the effects of external childcare on child functioning and education internationally, most research has focused on short-term effects only, and few studies have been done in Switzerland.
 
A new project at the Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development focuses on the long-term relation of external childcare with later child and youth functioning. Central in this project is the extent to which children attended external childcare facilities, such as day care centers, day care mothers, and playgroups. This is then analyzed in relation to children’s later functioning, including social behavior, risk behavior, and education.
 
The project is funded by the Jacobs Foundation, and data from the Zurich Project on the Social Development from Childhood into Adulthood (z-proso) are used. The z-proso data cover the lives of young people up to 20 years of age. The data include an extensive set of characteristics and behaviors. The project ends July 1, 2019.
