Lisa Seelig posed these and other questions to Moritz Daum, Director of the Jacobs Center and Professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of Zurich, in the issue 32/2024 of ZEIT.
“It's impossible for parents to always perform in a child-friendly way in today's busy family life. Parents don't have to be perfect, it's enough if they provide sufficient care and support to enable their child to develop healthily,” says Moritz Daum in the interview. At the same time, he also points out risks; for example, parents should be aware that younger children find it difficult to understand ambiguity. It helps in such situations if parents consciously explain “that something contradictory has just happened and why”.
